UFC 87
By Chris f.
UFC 87 was a PPV that gave MMA fans everything they could ask for and more. Knockouts, grappling, brilliant submissions attempts and escapes, where all on display.
Brock Lesnar perhaps made the biggest impact of the night. He defeated Heath Herring in a three round decision. Normally, when you think of decisions, you think of boring drawn-out fights. Lesnar/Herring was interesting even without a finish. Brock used his wrestling this time around and completely dominated Heath Herring. Everytime Heath looked for a better spot Brock turned him back on his back and delivered pain. Pain is the only thing I could describe what Heath Herring had to go through. Brock Lesnar is dangerous and looked especially devastating landing blow after blow on the helpless Herring. The fight started off with a bang when Lesnar hit Heath with a punch that knocked him to his feet. By the time Heath tried to get up, Brock was already bull rushing into him on the ground. There was some controversy after the fight was over due to Brock’s post match celebrations. He acted as if he had a rope and had roped and caught Herring whose nickname happens to be the “ Crazy Horse.” Lesnar later said he didn’t care what anyone thought and his disrespect was due to words out of Herring’s camp that were negative about Lesnar.
Kenny Florian stopped “The Matador” Roger Huerta’s undefeated streak. The match was disappointing to some, but still a fun exciting three rounds of action. Florian was just a step ahead and out techinqued Huerta the whole fight.
The main event had another fight that went the distance with George St. Pierre beating Jon Fitch in five rounds. GSP was totally dominant again. He won with all facets of fighting, and Fitch just didn’t have an answer. Fitch was so beat up by the fourth round, I would have understood a stoppage. I appreciate the heart of Fitch, but sometimes enough is enough. After the fight, GSP was greeted by BJ Penn. Penn asked the crowd and GSP for the super fight we have been awaiting to be re matched. GSP, said he would take on all comers and gave Penn his word he would have a shot at the Welterweight title. It remains to be seen if the UFC will make the match happen due to Penn being in the Lightweight division. However, I would expect the match to be made with Penn coming up in weight, and allowing the Lightweight title to wait to be defended.
