UFC 88 RESULTS
UFC 88 BREAKTHROUGH
by CHRIS F.
UFC 88 did end up being a “ breakthrough” , but not in a good way. Chuck Lidell took a mighty fall, and the UFC lost another big time match.
Chuck Lidell Vs Rashad Evans 205
Chuck Lidell came into the match an overwhelming favorite. Chuck was booked to win this fight, and go on to a big time money matchup with 205 champion Forrest Griffin. Rashad came in undefeated, but has undefeated record that is very susceptible to becoming defeated. This was why the UFC setup Chuck Vs Rashad, in hopes of having Chuck defeat an undefeated fighter, therefore giving him a reason to go on to facing Forrest Griffin for another shot at the belt. Things didn’t end up going as planned.
Just like Mirko Cro Cop, Chuck was struck down with his own favorite weapon his being an overhand right. Chuck laid prone on the ground, it looked as if he were dead. In all accounts his career atleast was.
Rashad Evans went into the fight with a winning gameplan, I will give him that much. He comes from a camp that trainer Greg Jackson runs. Jackson had success coming up with a gameplan that allowed Keith Jardine to get a decision victory over Lidell.
This fight was pretty basic. Rashad came out, not looking to take Chuck down, but to score with kicks and punches on a defensive front. He would lay back and allow Chuck to stalk after him and then strike. Chuck came out with the same game plan and never changed even when he was getting out struck. Rashad was patient enough to wait and the moment came where Chuck opened himself up to the overhand right to the chin.
Rashad ended whatever hopes there was of another Chuck Lidell run on top of the UFC. This could have ended up being a good thing for the UFC and maybe for Chuck as well. Chuck has been fighting under a smoke screen, and the UFC doesn’t need to run with a guy who isn’t who he was. In other words, the UFC doesn’t need to promote Chuck Lidell as the baddest fighter in the world when he isn’t anymore. The UFC was smart enough to go on to the next big thing when Shamrock, and Ortiz’s runs as top guys ended.
Chuck Lidell has two options. One would be to call it a career. As much as most fans will want him to keep fighting, he is not the Chuck Lidell he used to be. Chuck fights with a style that if you knew anything about boxing you would want to immediately correct. But it worked for him, it worked because he had a strong chin and could hit harder than the guys he used to face. Now, the guys he faces are smarter, younger, and faster than him. If Chuck comes back and faces top competition we will see more of him on the floor, then with a belt in hand. I would rather Chuck retire than come back and keep fighting on like a Shamrock, or even Ali. Seeing a hero become a punching bag is a sad state, and even worse is the damage done to himself later in life.
However, I do think Chuck has another option. He is hard headed and thinks his KO power can win any fight. But, if changes his ways he could potentially come back stronger. If I was Chuck and still wanted to be a top fighter I would go back and start using all the weapons in my arsenal. This also means maybe changing camps and starting to train with the top trainers and fighters in the sport. Chuck needs to have a better gameplan then thinking about landing a one punch KO. He needs kicks, wrestling, and a boxing stance. He needs to protect himself better, and come at guys with better angles. This could be done, Chuck has the skill set it all just matters if it is in his mind to come back as this kind of fighter. Randy Couture has changed himself many times, Chuck can do the same. Its all up to Chuck who he wants to become.
As for Rashad Evans, I wholeheartedly believe giving him the title shot next is a mistake. Forrest Griffin would end that undefeated streak fairly easily. Rashad is not even close to the fighter Rampage Jackson is and Rampage was taken a part by Griffin. Usually you don’t compare who fought who when your looking at fights but this takes up a fair comparison. As Evans is like the poor man’s version of Rampage. Very poor at that.
